ISLAMABAD:
National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) accused the Karachi Electric (KE) on Thursday, of widespread violations of its privatisation agreement and licence conditions, announcing that it is initiating regulatory proceedings against the utility.
A Nepra spokesperson told a news briefing that a show-cause notice would be issued next week to the KE management before imposing a fine of up to Rs100 million or appointing an administrator for the takeover of the company.
Nepra chairman Tariq Sadozai was present on the occasion.
The spokesperson claimed that violations of all agreements and licence conditions, relating to power generation and transmission and distribution, by the KE had been established.
Despite taking Rs13 billion from the government at the time of privatisation to deliver certain things, the KE did not implement the agreement.
The spokesperson said the duration of loadshedding in Karachi during Ramazan had extended from 12 to 96 hours at a stretch, contrary to the utility’s claims of eight to 10 hours of loadshedding.
