Sindh comes hard on offenders for city’s water

KWSB (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated for safe and secure water supply for Karachi

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan Thursday promulgated the “Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (Amendment) Ordinance, 2015.”

The newly amended ordinance aimed at to provide and maintain the safe and secure water supply for drinking and domestic use to residents of Karachi. It is expedient to assure the smooth and uninterrupted flow from the source to destination and take stern action against water theft, illegal hydrants, outlet connections and damaging to water trunks.

“In the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Act, 1996, after section 14, the following new section shall be inserted: 14-A, (1) If any person who – (a) damages, punctures water trunk mains ranging from 18 inch diameter to 84 inch diameter, canals, pumping stations, conduits, siphons, reservoirs and chambers of the Board for any purpose including selling of water or taking illegal connections; (b) establishes illegal hydrant for industrial, commercial or residential use; and (c) encroaches upon the land of the Board; shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years and with fine which may extend to rupees one million or with both. The offences committed under subsection (1) shall be cognizable. The offences punishable under subsection (1) shall be tried by the Sessions Court,” according to the new amendment.
