NEW DELHI:

Organisers of the Champions League Twenty20 have canceled the tournament with immediate effect due to a lack of public interest.

The annual tournament, launched in 2009 and featuring the domestic T20 champions from around the world, was jointly run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa.

The BCCI issued a statement Wednesday saying the decision to scrap the tournament was made unanimously after organisers “determined that the discontinuation of the league was the most appropriate decision due to the tournament’s limited public following.”

BCCI official Anurag Thakur says, “Unfortunately, off the field, Champions League T20 wasn’t sustaining the interest of the fans as we had hoped.”

The CLT20 was launched in the wake of the early success of the Indian Premier League.
