A low level flood in River Chenab near Sialkot was reported on Tuesday, as the flow of flood water dropped to 97,371 cusecs from over night’s 157,046 cusecs at Head Marala Barrage on Tuesday.
The maximum flow of flood water was 97,371 cusecs upstream and 67,248 cusecs downstream in the river.
According to the Sialkot Flood Control focal person Malik Abid Awan (DOC Sialkot), the flood situation was totally under control. He said that the Rivers Tavi and Jammu and seasonal Naullahs Aik, Dek, Palkhu and Bhed, Tuesday, remained calm and cool in Sialkot district.
He added that the flood water level reduced to 4,083 cusecs from recent 12,000 cusecs in swollen Naullah Dek near Kingra-Pasrur.
Awan revealed that the district administration of Sialkot was alert and monitoring the flood situation round-the-clock.
He said that flow of flood water was 3,347 cusecs in River Jammu Tavi and 2,580 cusecs in River Munaawar Tavi near Chaprar-Sialkot.
“The water level is receding there while the overall flood situation is totally under control in the district,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has decided to install an advanced computerised Flood Warning System at Head Marala Barrage to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of flood situation in River Chenab, as there had been no flood warning system at Head Marala Barrage since its construction six decades ago.
According to senior officials of the Irrigation Department, the early installation of this advanced flood warning system at River Chenab had now become vital. They added that the flood warning system, to be linked with satellite, would give the special flood warning 36 hours before the flood in the river.
They said that the WAPDA, Federal Flood Control Authority, District Administration and Irrigation Department would be able to have joint round-the-clock monitoring of flood in River Chenab.
They said that the early flood warnings by this system, having automatic sirens, would also help the district administrations of Sialkot, Gujrat and other districts along the banks of River Chenab to save the areas along the banks, besides, shifting the people and live stock to the safer places in a bid to avert the recurring flood threats.
The officials said that the River Chenab has a total length of 731 KM while the total length of the dykes on Chenab is 1,330 KM.
Meanwhile, the Flood Control Authority has also directed the authorities concerned to make the anti-flood fighting arrangements as more affective at Head Marala, Head Khanki, Head Qadirabad, Head Trimu and Head Punjnad to control and handle the flood situation there in River Chenab more effectively.
