India court adjourns Salman Khan’s appeal

MUMBAI:

An Indian court Monday adjourned the start of Bollywood star Salman Khan’s appeal over a five-year sentence for a deadly hit-and-run at the request of the actor’s lawyers, reports said.

The Bombay High Court deferred the hearing until July 20 to give time for documents relating to the 2002 incident to be translated, according to the Press Trust of India.

Khan, 49, was found guilty on May 6 of killing a homeless man with his SUV after a night out drinking in an upmarket bar in Mumbai 13 years ago.

Further, with eight charges against Khan, including culpable homicide and a non-bailable offence, the court earlier deemed him guilty and has sentenced him to five years in prison.

The sentence was later suspended, pending an appeal, and Salman — the star of more than 100 films and television shows — was released on bail.
