The branch manager was among three staff members killed when a man opened fire inside a bank in Allama Iqbal Town area on Thursday. A few hours later, police gunned down the assailants in an ‘encounter’, claiming that he was trying to flee custody.

According to Lahore police chief Amin Wains, Abdullah, a cashier at the Government Science College, Wahdat Road, had withdrawn Rs 2.5 million from the bank on forged signatures a few days ago and the branch’s operation manager Nasir Khan had identified him when the fraud was discovered.

On Thursday, Abdullah entered the bank armed with a gun and opened indiscriminate fire when the security guard blocked his way. The bullets instantly killed Nasir Khan, cashier Suhail Khan and security guard Khalid Khan while four other bank employees, identified as Sidra, Sobia, Muhammad Hassan and Sikandar suffered serious injuries.

“One of the injured is in critical condition while the rest are out of danger,” a hospital source revealed.

Wains said that passersby and the bank’s other guards were able to capture Abdullah and he was handed into police custody.

Some hours later, the police claimed that it was taking Abdullah on a raid to nab the person who had sold him the weapon when the accused attempted to break free. According to police, Abdullah was killed in police firing when he challenged the enforcers.
