The heavy spells of monsoon rain exposed the poor drainage system in the Federal Capital as a number of roads became submerged after drains began to overflow.
The system, boasted to be the best in the country, could not bear the water load during the two day rainfall and ran through streets, houses and markets.
The situation on the day in different sectors of the federal capital highlighted the negligence and incompetence of the civic authorities. Streets and houses flooded with water in the sectors of a city known to be well managed and well equipped with facilities, made a mockery of the tall claims of the CDA authorities.
A ramp at the Zero Point interchange was inundated after the first heavy monsoon downpour and caused problems for light traffic coming from Faisal Avenues. Even today, several roads were submerged under the water after the brief spell of heavy rain.
The road from NDC to 7-Up Chowk along I-10 and I-9 area IS being used by heavy traffic. It is totally worn out, and is yet to be repaired.
“The entire road, especially near the Islamabad Railway Station and service road from I-10/3 industrial area to 7-Up Chowk, is in a very bad shape which may cause accidents,” Naeem Ejaz, a motorist said.
An employee of a private company who daily uses the road from IJP Principal to Police Lines Road said that cavities on these roads turn into tiny ponds when it rains even for a few minutes.
These cavities also result in accidents, resulting in injuries for motorists, especially bike drivers.
Similarly, link road from Sabzi Mandi to NDC has also broken and required urgent maintenance.
The commuters asked the concerned authorities to immediately start the rehabilitation of these roads which were being used by a large number of public and private transports.
They also urged the concerned authorities to speed up cleaning of drainage system in the Federal Capital.
When contacted, an official of the concerned department of Capital Development Authority (CDA) informed that the maintenance of all the roads was carried out on a regular basis.
The repair and maintenance work of all these roads would also be completed as early as possible, he added.
