After less than 24 hours of restoration of power supply, a major power breakdown hit Karachi again on Thursday night plunging more than half of the metropolis into darkness.
The blackout began after the power supply from Bin Qasim-I halted. A transmission line of 220 KV tripped again exposing K-Electric’s mismanagement. The areas affected by power failure included Buffer Zone, Ramswami, Ayesha Manzil, Orangi Town, Metroville SITE, Soldier Bazar, Tipu Sultar Road and Surjani Town.
All blocks of Federal B Area are also facing the blackout. After the breakdown, the power supply discontinued to major parts of the metropolis including North Karachi’s 5G1, areas around Nipa Chowrangi, Liaquatabad C1 Area, Safoora Goth, Saadi Town, Korangi, Gulshan-e-Jamal, Abul Hassan Isfahani Road, Baldia Town, Model Colony, North Nazimabad, Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Gulshah-e-Iqbal’s 13B and PIB Colony.
According to the K-Electric spokesman, the tripping of the high transmission line affected 12 out of 64 grids. The K-Electric mouthpiece said the technical glitch in the national grid sparked the power breakdown, adding the power supply has been restored in most areas of the metropolis.
A press release issued by the ministry of water and power said that KE’s KDA transformers again tripped today (Thursday) and sent a powerful jerk backwards to HUBCO plant.
The protection system put in place by the ministry of water and power worked and after tripping of HUBCOs three plants, there was no effect on any other part of the system and the issue was isolated between the KE and HUBCO. This shows the successful implementation and working of the system protection plan, the ministry claimed.
This is the third tripping from the KE since the other day which has been effectively isolated by the protection system by the national transmission system.
