Poor chlorination of water continues as Naegleria claims ninth victim

Director Health Karachi Dr Zafar Ejaz on Monday said at least nine people have been died from brain-eating Naegleria Fowleri in 2015.

He said that six deaths were reported from Karachi, two from interior Sindh and one from Hub. He said eight males and one female had died from Naegleria Fowleri this past year.

Earlier, a person died d by the brain-eating amoeba, taking the death toll nine in the province since January 2015.

A 23-year-old resident of Umerkot district was initially taken to a public hospital in Hyderabad but was later moved to a private hospital in critical condition and died from Naegleria on other day.

Insufficient chlorinated water may trigger Naegleria.

Focal Person Naegleria Committee Health Department Sindh Dr Zafar Mehdi said  Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) is running 155 pumping stations across the city and water samples collected showed that the chlorination level present in water supplied across the city is not satisfactory.

He feared that insufficient chlorinated water may trigger Naeglera cases as chlorination level in 95 percent pumping station is unsatisfactory.
