In a ruling on Islamabad capital territory’s local government bill, Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani on Monday declared that local government elections in the federal government without a legal cover will be inappropriate.
He pointed out that an order of the Supreme Court passed in March last was being relied upon in this regard. The chairman held that no one working under the Constitution could rely on a legislative proposal pending approval by the Parliament.
Earlier, Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq, Leader of the Opposition Aitzaz Ahsan and several other members said no law existed to govern local government elections in Islamabad. They said National Assembly has passed a bill in this regard but the Senate Standing Committee has suggested several fundamental amendments to the bill.
