Central, Nara jails operating at double capacity

HYDERABAD:

According to a report submitted to the home ministry by deputy commission Fayaz Ahmed Jatoi, the Central Jail’s housing capacity is 1527 inmates and it houses 2612 inmates, and the Nara Jail’s capacity is 300 prisoners and it houses 665 inmates, reportedly.

The report further pointed out that the prisoners were cramped in the jail cells due to a shortage of space.

The overcrowded prisons in Hyderabad have become a health risk for prisoners due to unavailability of cool water and proper meals, according to sources.

At least four prisoners, including two young men in their twenties, died in the Central jail during the heatwave last month.
