A number of philanthropists and mosque committees have arranged free ‘Iftar Sherbet’ in addition to Iftar dinners for less fortunate people enabling them break their daily fast at various places in the twin cities.
They have set up temporary roadside tables and mats to provide free sherbet and Iftar meals for the needy.
A number of people including labourers, passerby and others belonging to under-privileged class break their fast with sherbet which is very useful in present hot weather condition.
It is observed that a lot number of people come forward and arrange free sherbet and food to help the needy, especially in the holy month of Ramzan, Saleem Khan, a resident of I-10 sector commented. He said that Ramzan is a month of fasting, it is also a time for community to provide their brethren who are poor and needy an opportunity to break their fast and eat together.
Businessman Rashid Iqbal Soomro is one of the many philanthropists in Rawalpindi who arranges free iftar sherbet and meals for more than 500 people daily in Liaqat Bagh area.
“They are our brothers. They cannot afford to buy food for iftar. We arrange iftar for about five hundred, six hundred people here everyday. I make this arrangement with cooperation from some friends,” he said.
“I am a poor labourer,” said Niaz Hussain. “I don’t have enough money to buy Iftar food and break my fast at home,” he said sitting at a roadside charity Iftar.
“Sometimes, we leave the office very late and we have to break fast on the way,” said Mohammed Naushad, who works as a clerk in a private company.
For many years, street Iftar meals have been a Ramazan tradition in the twin cities because commuters are often stuck in traffic jams and fail to reach their homes in time to break their fast.
