Interior Ministry says 60,420 arrests made under NAP, 97.9m SIMs verified through biometric process, 5.1m blocked

The Interior Ministry on Saturday said that National Action Plan (NAP) is a national agenda and not the responsibility of a single department or ministry and a report on its implementation will be presented in the Supreme Court next week.

In a statement issued by the ministry, a spokesperson said that terrorist activities in the country had decreased following NAP’s implementation – a fact acknowledged by international organisations as well.

“Operation Zarb-e-Azb has broken terrorists’ back while crime rate has also reduced significantly. All the federal and provincial departments are working closely on NAP and the apex committees are fully monitoring its implementation,” the spokesperson said, pointing out that as many as 54,376 combing operations have been conducted so far, leading to 60,420 arrests while 3,019 intelligence-based operations have also been carried out. About 56,000 criminals including 688 terrorists have been arrested, he added.

Moreover, the ministry said that as a result of Karachi Operation, there has been 44 per cent reduction in targeted killings, 37 per cent in murders, 46 per cent in terrorism and 23 per cent in thefts.

Furthermore, the spokesperson said that 97.9 million SIMs have been verified through biometric process while 5.1 million have been blocked.
