Federal Minister for Commerce Engr Khurram Dastgir Khan said on Friday that welfare of consumers was the prime objective of the government and it would ensure that they get sugar at a lower price and the supply of the commodity was abundant.
Khurram Dastgir Khan stated this while chairing a meeting to ensure stabilization of prices of sugar in the country.
The meeting was convened on the directions of Economic Coordination Committee of (ECC) of the Cabinet and was attended by the representatives of ministry of commerce, ministry of industries and Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA).
The meeting directed the PSMA to enhance the supply of sugar in the open market in order to maintain the prices of sugar at a reasonable level.
The PSMA informed the meeting that the country had a stock of 3.8 million metric tons of sugar which was sufficient to cater to the demands of the country till next April.
The association was of the view that minor rise in the prices of sugar was because of the sudden rise in demand of the commodity due to Ramzan.
