The National Accountability Bureau’s additional deputy prosecutor general informed the Sindh High Court on Friday that an inquiry into complaint against former Sindh education minister Pir Mazharul Haq about bogus appointments of 13,000 teachers and receiving kickbacks is underway and requested it to dismiss his bail application.

A division bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar extended till August 6 pre-arrest bail granted to former provincial minister in a corruption inquiry. Haq approached the court seeking pre-arrest bail to avoid his possible arrest at the hands of NAB authorities in pursuance of an enquiry launched against him.

Advocate for the applicant had stated that his client had learned through the papers that the NAB’s executive board had ordered an enquiry into a complaint against him for allegedly making bogus appointments of 13,000 teachers and receiving bribes. He claimed the inquiry was instituted to harass and victimize his client on the basis of this inquiry.

During proceedings on Friday, the additional deputy prosecutor general for the NAB informed the judges that the bail application was premature as the matter pertains to a complaint about bogus appointment of 13,000 teachers and receiving kickbacks and inquiry in this regard is underway. Therefore, he submitted that the application merits dismissal.

Meanwhile, the same bench extended till July 23 bail before arrest granted to Provincial Minister for Population Welfare Sindh Syed Ali Mardan Shah in connection with an enquiry launched against him for alleged misuse of authority and embezzlement of public funds.

The applicant through his counsel Barrister Zamir Ghumro submitted that he had learned through the papers that NAB had initiated an inquiry against him for alleged abuse of authority and embezzlement of public funds. While denying allegations, the applicant told the judges that the inquiry was launched to victimise him because of his political affiliation.
