The federal government on Wednesday has shown approval over conducting local bodies election in Islamabad on party basis, local media reported while quoting officials.
As per sources, the decision was taken due to the continuous pressure of opposition parties Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the government. Besides this, a session held at Attorney General office to debate on this decision and to inspect the possible legal complexities after the issuance of electoral schedule.
The meeting was attended by special assistant to Prime Minister Ashtar Ausaf, Barrister Zafar Ullah and Tariq Fazal.
According to details, more than 1,000 candidates have submitted their nomination papers to contest in LB polls however, the appeals challenging these papers can be filed by today i.e. Thursday.
Moreover, the federal capital will hold LB polls on July 25.
Meanwhile, Islamabad High court (IGC) on Wednesday rejected a petition to halt the local bodies election in the federal capital. A 2-member bench of IHC presided over by Justice Noor ul Haq Qureshi while announcing reserved judgment in the case rejected all the petitions with regards to the LB polls.
PTI leader Asad Omar had filed petition seeking holding of LB polls on party basis in Islamabad.
The other petitioners had filed petitions seeking nullification of notification about delimitation of constituencies and staying LB polls in federal capital.
