  • KP AAG report says no monitoring mechanism to check NGOs’ foreign funding

The federal and provincial governments on Wednesday submitted reports in the Supreme Court (SC) on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) functional in the country.

According to the report submitted by the deputy attorney general (DAG), 635 NGOs are registered and working in the capital under the Society Act whereas 494 NGOs are operational under the Social Welfare Act.

According to the Punjab additional advocate general (AAG)’s report, 7,516 NGOs are working in Punjab which are registered and regulated by Social Welfare Department and Baitul Maal. However, several NGOs are running without the Social Welfare Law and are effective under the Society Trust Act, Company’s Ordinance and other laws, the report said.

The report also reveals that besides national and international support, the NGOs also get financial aid from the public whereas they are regularly monitored and their annual audit is also carried on.

In the report submitted by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) AAG, it has been stated that more than 10,000 NGOs are carrying out their activities in the province. However, there is no monitoring mechanism to check their foreign funding, therefore their registration and other procedures are conducted according to Punjab’s law regarding NGOs.

Moreover, the report presented by Sindh additional advocate general has cited the presence of more than 1,500 NGOs in the province.
