Killing menace decline in city: report

A report of Karachi police on Wednesday claimed that the menace of killings in the financial hub has registered a considerable decline by more than 50 percent in first six months of the year following operation of law enforcement agencies.

According to police report, as many as 501 people lost their lives in incidents of killings from January 1, 2015, to June 30th this year. While during the corresponding period in 2014, the figure stood at 1,062.

The report further elaborates that in 2011, around 2,042 people lost their lives to killings, followed by 2,403 in 2012, 2,789 in 2013 and 1,823 in 2014. In 2015 so far, law enforcement agencies had 965 encounters in which 424 criminals were killed while 17,103 criminals were nabbed during police operations. In fighting against criminals and terrorists in the city, as many as 55 policemen were martyred this year. While in 2014, the number of martyred cops was 142. It’s ironic to note that heatwave in the city killed almost 1,200 people – almost double of the number of target killings in the city in first six months.
