Dwayne Smith’s half-century was backed up by a collective bowling effort as Barbados Tridents beat Jamaica Tallawahs by 16 runs at the Kensington Oval. Robin Peterson was named Man of the Match for taking 3 for 26 to trip up Tallawahs’ chase of 162.

Smith struck 56 off 53 balls after Tridents captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and chose to bat. Smith and Munaweera set the tone, adding 57 for the first wicket. Shoaib Malik then built on the platform, assembling 60 for the second wicket with Smith, who brought up his fifty off 44 balls with a single in the 14th over.

Smith finished with four fours and two sixes before dragging an Andre Russell yorker onto his stumps. Malik and Jonathan Carter provided a late surge with Malik hitting three sixes in his unbeaten 43 off 29 balls while Carter hit two of his own in a swift cameo.

Tallawahs’ chase suffered an early setback with Chris Gayle falling for nine off 15 balls. Peterson then made major inroads in the eighth over, striking with his very first ball as Chadwick Walton attempted a slog to be bowled for 23. Two balls later, Mahela Jayawardene groped for a delivery that spun past his outside edge and with his foot dragged outside the crease Carter completed a simple stumping to leave Tallawahs 50 for 3.

After Chris Lynn and Horace Miller briefly revived the chase with a 51-run stand, Peterson struck again to remove Lynn for 37. Ravi Rampaul effectively put the chase on ice when he had Russell caught by Pollard at long-on for 12 in the 17th over before Miller hit Pollard to Navin Stewart at deep square leg for 30 to make it 124 for 7. Tallawahs eventually ended on 145 for 9 in their 20 overs as Tridents picked up their second straight win.
