Country cannot be left at mercy of NGOs: Justice Khawaja

Hearing a social organisation’s case pertaining to fake cheque, a three-member Supreme Court (SC) bench presided over by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja Tuesday directed the federal and provincial governments to furnish details on funding and monitoring of the non-government organisations (NGOs).

Maintaining that the “country could not be left at the mercy of these NGOs”, Justice Khawaja demanded that motives and interests of NGOs be explained while the governments should also inform the court about the number of registered NGOs along with their areas of operation.

“Details about the procedure of their registration be also provided. Only these names cannot be relied upon,” he added.

Earlier during the hearing, Punjab Additional Advocate General (AAG) Razzaq A Mirza told the court that over 7,000 NGOs were functioning in Punjab in different sectors.

The court was told that deputy director of a social organisation had given the cheque which was proved fake and the official’s bail application was also filed. Later on, the hearing of the case was adjourned indefinitely.
