With the advent of Ramzan, prices of fruit, vegetables and daily used commodities went up exponentially with sellers making extra-charges in total disregard of the official rate list.
During a survey of the market, it was observed that prices of vegetables, fruits and other items have gone by 20 to 100 per cent as compared to the prices, which were in place before the start of Ramzan.
In Ghanjmandi and Raja Bazaar fruit and vegetable markets, potatoes were being sold at Rs 130 per five kg, onion at Rs 240 per five kg, tomatoes at Rs 80 per kg.
Similarly, apples were being sold at Rs 250 per kg, mangoes at Rs 140 per kg, bananas at Rs 140 per dozen and peaches at Rs 140 per kg in different parts of the city. The sudden rise in prices has put consumers in an awkward situation, while the local and district administration has ignored the issue by letting the sellers mint money from gullible consumers.
The authorities claimed that a robust regime has been put in place to control prices but the citizens said the claim was nothing but a ploy. The citizens have demanded that market committees should be formed to place a check on prices to save consumers from being looted by sellers
