Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday lashed out at the civil and military establishment in a hard-hitting speech fuelled by a recent report by the Sindh Rangers in which the paramilitary force had accused influential politicians of involvement in serious financial crimes in the financial hub of Pakistan, Karachi.

Zardari, while speaking at the oath taking ceremony of party office-bearers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said PPP was a staunch supporter of democracy, which was why his party backed the PML-N government to complete its tenure.

“Had we joined Kaptaan [Imran Khan] during his street protest and resigned from parliament, elections would have been inevitable,” he said, adding that he had supported the government because he did not want them to “later complain they had not been given their due time at the helm”.

“Others might be in a hurry, I am not. I can wait for the sake of democracy,” said Zardari.

The former president also took a jab at the military, saying that army chiefs come and go every three years but the political leadership is here to stay. “We know the country better and we know how to run its affairs,” he said.

Zardari said he did not want to weaken the country’s institutions, but “they should also not try to create hurdles for politicians”.

“Do not threaten us with lists. We also have lists containing names of your comrades who have been plundering the nation’s wealth since its inception. We also know who will be standing trial in courts over corrupt practices.”

The PPP co-chairman warned his political rivals that if his party took to the streets it won’t just be Sindh where roads would be blocked. “The whole country from Karachi to Khyber will come to a standstill and will remain so till I order my people to leave.” He said that the establishment should separate itself from politics and should not interfere in matters out of its domain.

NISAR SLAMS ZARDARI:

Reacting to Zardari’s salvo against the military, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar said that the PPP chief had made derogatory remarks against a national institution which was respected by all Pakistanis.

“Zardari’s criticism of the military is an attempt to cover up the PPP’s inability in bring peace in Sindh, particularly Karachi,” said Nisar.

  1. Zardari's enrage was directed at the establishment and cow toeing Sharif government. ppp supported PML9n0 in the troubled times, but look at the government how it treats its allies. The volcanic explosion was triggered by recent Ranger's Raid on the Housing Control Authority and his confident's arrest. He said do not malign us otherwise we will close the cities from Karachi to Peshawar. this is a kind of mixed warning before the actual storm.

I do not think this is the time to fight over these matters when the enemy is knocking at the door. Both the government and the establishment show some restraint over its zealous approach to set the things right. We must be unity and express complete solidarity.

  2. Mr Site Administrator : You kill decent posts and approve indecent language like Post # 3 above. Are you satisfied with your decision-making?

  3. All these political parties are involved in desatbilising Karachi and obviously each of them will cry when the operation will turn against them.

To Zardari! Your party is no longer a national party. It is only supported by blind followers in Sindh. Keep that in mind. You can threaten anyone using Sindh card and victimisation but people of Pakistan have not given you the power to run country affairs and I hope we Pakistanis never have to endure you again. So keep your big fat mouth shut.

  4. when the army is a part of politics,an active player at that,it must have the heart for criticism

  5. Will this Army do this job properly and make sure to convict this most corrupt person and its allies in Pakistan! being just in jail shouldnt be objective. Finish the job properly!
Supreme Court should allow military courts so they can do the job what normal courts are afraid or fail to do.

  6. Zardari has no shame. He is known around the world as Mr 30 percent, most corrupt politician ever. And destroyed Pakistan during his tenure. Bigger shame is for the people who voted for this crook. Inshaallah rangers will continue to do their job and arrest zardari and his thugs. And any one who is involve in corruption. And zardari you are not great Bhutto. You are thug.

  7. Zardari has overstepped his mark . He doesn’t have immunity for life and the money which is begotten by corrupt means will reach sleeper cells and gangsters which play havoc with innocent lives. Pakistan will never come to a standstill at the call of the Zardari. The Army is doing a good job with the militant political parties. All one needs to do is bide time and all of these political parties will dig their own grave
