In an interesting development at PP-97 Gujranwala VII constituency where Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Nasir Cheema will be taking part in the re-polling at 33 polling stations on June 21 with Pakistan Muslim League Quaid’s electoral symbol (bicycle).

The re-polling would be conducted in polling stations No 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 17, 59, 62, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 85, 87, 88, 91, 92, 93, 94, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 105, 106, 110, 113, 114, 115 and 117.

Cheema who was PML-Q’s candidate in 2013 general elections and lost to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N’s) Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Warriach by approximately 7,000 votes.

Cheema challenged the victory of PML-N candidate in PP-97, alleging that the polling results were rigged during May 11, 2013 general elections. On May 5, 2014 the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared the results of 33 polling stations in PP-97 Gujranwala anulled.

Warraich challenged the decision in the Supreme Court of Pakistan which rejected his appeal on May 31, 2015. Meanwhile, Cheema joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).  Now interestingly, Cheema would be contesting the polls from PTI’s platform using PML-Q’s symbol.

Senior PTI leadership including Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Jahangir Tareen are campaigning for Cheema in PP-97, the constituency which comprises Ghakar Mandi and surrounding villages.

According to sources, PTI’s central leadership is making effort to win this constituency from the ruling party.

Cheema, enjoys the support of a large number of people from the constituency and a neck-and-neck contest is expected in the re-polling of 33 polling stations.
