SHC reserves verdict on contempt case against police bosses

The Sindh High Court on Friday reserved its verdict in contempt of court case against Sindh Police IG Ghulam Haider Jamali, AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo and other senior police officers.

A division bench headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah reserved its verdict after hearing final arguments on the point of whether or not to indict IGP Ghulam Hyder Jamali, Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo and other senior police officers over contempt charges. The pronouncement of the verdict was put off to a date to be fixed by the court office later on.

IG Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali, Ghulam Qadir Thebo and other police officers are facing contempt charges for unlawfully laying siege around the court and carrying out operations within its premises without taking the court officials into the confidence.

During Friday’s proceedings, IG’s counsel Farooq H Naek once again requested the judges to accept the apologies tendered by IG Sindh and other senior police officers. “Their apologies would not be accepted as their act showed utter contempt for the court,” remarked Justice Sajjad.

Naik said that the taskforce had got information about the presence of heavily armed persons, and therefore they carried out operation. On hearing this, the judges expressed displeasure, saying why the court officials were not informed about it before taking the action.

On May 23, 2015, masked and armed policemen had besieged the court during Dr Zulifqar Mirza’s presence in court in an apparent bid to arrest him. The masked personnel had beaten up the guards of Dr Mirza and the media persons at the main gate of the SHC building. The policemen had also smashed several parked vehicles and snatched cameras from journalists.
