Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid on Monday told the two Houses of Parliament that Pakistan Television would provide live coverage of budget session to television channels.

“We will provide live feed from tomorrow and it is up to the TV channels to telecast live proceedings of the budget session in accordance with their own editorial judgement,” he said.

Earlier, the political leaders held a meeting with the NA speaker and cabinet members to discuss a solution for the demand of opposition members for live telecast of the budget proceedings.

Pervaiz Rashid said that a meeting was held with the management of Pakistan Television to make arrangements for live streaming of the proceedings of two Houses. The minister said the live coverage of question hour in 1997 was also a credit of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.”We are telecasting question hour live presently also and the credit of making the arrangements for live telecast of the budget session also goes to the PML-N government,” he added.

He said the proposal of finance minister to establish a separate TV channel for coverage of parliamentary proceedings needed both time and funding.

Earlier, the information minister told the National Assembly that live broadcast of the finance minister’s budget speech was a tradition.

He was responding to a demand of Syed Khursheed Shah, Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly, regarding live coverage of the proceedings of the budget session.

The minister said the proceedings of the Parliament were aired live during the sit-in of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, with the consensus of parliamentarians. “The PTV and allied departments working under Ministry of Information will cover the point of view of opposition leader in an appropriate and proper way,” he added.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said his ministry could provide funding for establishing a separate TV channel to telecast live proceedings of the parliament.
