An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC-2) on Friday handed over Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Rabita Committee member Amir Khan to Azizabad police on a one-week physical remand.
Amir Khan along with 55 others was arrested on March 11 during after paramilitary forces raid conducted at the party’s nine-zero headquarters. On March 13, Rangers told courts that Khan will be kept on a 90-day preventive detention for question.
On Thursday, the Rangers handed over Khan to the police, who presented him at ATC-2. The police contended that Khan confessed before a Joint Investigation Team that he was in charge of the Khursheed Memorial Hall area at Nine-Zero, adding he was sheltering suspected people there.
He said the party members would hear out people’s problems there and then try to find out their solutions. However, the plaintiff’s counsel said that Khan was not the owner of the hospital and thus he could not accommodate anyone there.
The Rangers law officer said that no investigation had been done for the past 90 days. However, the joint investigation team (JIT) did its job, he added.
The Azizabad police had registered a first information report (FIR) on Rangers’ complaint. After both sides presented their arguments in the hearing, the court handed over Khan to the police.
A large number of supporters and some Rabita Committee members were present on court premises and raised slogans. Meanwhile, Rangers released majority of the 56 suspects who were initially kept for 90 days on preventive detention.
