Police reforms

A senior retired army officer left a chit on my table which raises a question: Is government ready to give up the coercive powers of police? If so following steps may be taken in this regard:

  • A. IG Police’s tenure may be fixed for four years
  • B. Financial powers may rest with IG Police
  • C. Administrative powers may rest with IG Police

The concept of “Services Review Board” under the government needs to be revised in light of above recommendations. The government may consider above steps to make police immune to interference by political masters of our time.

It appears unless and until the above autonomous steps are not taken it would be futile to expect that any improvement can be expected from undesirable police behaviour that has become hallmark of our police.
