Govt intends to launch affordable housing schemes: PM

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said the government wants to launch housing schemes at mass scale to provide affordable housing facilities to the people.

He was addressing the concluding session of the two-day international conference on Affordable Housing and Mortgage Finance. The prime minister said we have to fulfil the housing needs of 40 million families. He suggested that the private sector should give their suggestions and coordinate with the government for launching housing schemes. “The government is ready to contribute on its part in this regard,” he added.

Addressing the audience, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the government intends to activate the housing industry to enhance the country’s GDP growth. He said there is a shortage of nine million houses in the country. He said Housing Finance Credit Guarantee Scheme will be launched to provide loans for houses, adding that Housing Building Finance Corporation has also been revamped to facilitate the people.

State Bank of Pakistan Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra and Deputy Governor Saeed Ahmad also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the aims and objectives of the conference as well as the deliberations made during the two-day conference, which was also attended by experts from Canada, Malaysia, France, UAE and Bangladesh.
