  • JIT report says police officials responsible for killing of 14 persons outside TMQ Secretariat in Lahore’s Model Town last year

Holding 10 policemen, including former SP Security Salman Ali responsible for the killing of 14 persons in Model Town last year, the joint investigation team (JIT)’s report on the tragedy has acquitted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah and cabinet members of the charges.

The police and Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) had only been ordered to remove encroachments, the report said.

It said that the workers of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) threw petrol bombs and stones on the police and damaged the armoured van, adding that SP Salman ordered police firing and fired shot himself as well.

Besides Salman, those who have been held responsible for the killing of PAT workers include SHO Amir Saleem, two sub-inspectors of the Elite Force and seven constables. Five of the officers are already under custody whereas the arrest of the remaining will be decided by the law enforcers.

Based on the August 28 FIR lodged by Minhajul Quran (MuQ), the Punjab government had formed a new investigation team but it was rejected by the PAT leadership. The new five-member JIT was formed on February 11, 2014, headed by Quetta CCPO Abdul Razzaq Cheema, AIG Discipline at CPO SSP Shehzad Akbar, CIA DSP Khalid Abubakar and one official each from Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB).
