Newborn twines die due to unavailability of ventilators

The deaths of two infants owing to unavailability ventilators at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) resulted in protests by angered parents on Tuesday.

Hospital sources confirmed two newly-born babies died in the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) due to unavailability of ventilators. The parents of children protested and demanded for enquiry into the incident.

Sources informed that Muhammad Shafiq, resident of Lines Area, Karachi rushed her wife to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center where she gave birth of three baby girls. Later, he shifted her wife along the babies to the National Institute of Child Health on advice of doctors.

The babies were suffering from respiratory and underweight complications and two of them later died due to unavailability of ventilators. The medical staff could not arrange ventilators for infants despite repeated requests of the family. NICH Executive Director Dr Jamal Raza said was not available for comments.
