The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) administration has postponed its scheduled surgical operations due to suspension of water supply to institution since 24 hours, sources at the healthcare said on Tuesday.

They said there was an acute shortage of water in JPMC since 24 hours owing to suspension of water supply to healthcare. They informed that shortfall had increased the miseries of patients, doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and other staff. The cleanliness and other routine operation works had also been badly affected.

There was no water in operation theatres, wards, college of nursing, paramedical training institution, staff colony and doctors colony since last 24 hours. The Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) administration has sent water tankers to overcome water shortage in healthcare but the tankers are not enough.

The hospital’s sanitation system is also badly affected due to water shortage. They said KWSB supplies water to hospital seven days a week, which too had been suspended.

Sources said the management stored water in water tankers and other reservoirs set up in the hospital to ensure supply of water but these underground water reservoirs had been almost at dead level. They said the KWSB management event cut the supply of water to public hospital’s emergency and other medical units.

Deputy Director Admin & Focal Person Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center Dr Jawaid Jamali when contacted confirmed that about 20 scheduled operations have been suspended in institution due to suspension of water supply to healthcare.

He informed that there was acute shortage of water in operation theatres, wards, college of nursing and employees residential areas since last 24 hours. He said the KWSB administration on the request of JPMC management sent water tankers but these water tankers were not enough to meet actual water requirement.
