The media has a key role to play in the development of the country, said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) at Arfa Karim Software Technology Park and the concluding session of training workshop for journalists jointly arranged by CPNE, UNDP and PHEC on Sunday.

He said that media should also highlight the issues directly linked to the people.

“I decided to eliminate cheating mafia after reading a media report published in a newspaper in which son of a minister belonging to Sheikhupura was shown cheating at a fake examination centre,” he said quoting an example from his 1997-98 government tenure.

Boasting about his merit policy, he said that he brought merit policy of admission by eliminating quota in Atchison College last year.

“Before the policy was introduced, sons of politicians, senior officers, Tumans and Dars got admission in Atchison College. A message was conveyed to me that son of my late brother could only be admitted to the college if admissions of five children were allowed contrary to merit,” he said, adding that he denied the offer and ensured that no compromise is made on merit.

BUDGET REVIEWED:

Meanwhile presiding high level meeting to review the upcoming budget and Annual Development Programme (ADP) for financial year 2015-16, he directed that special attention should be paid to the progress and prosperity of the masses and achievement of targets of strengthening of economy under ADP.

He said that all departments and institutions should ensure utilisation of the development funds within the stipulated period while development projects under ADP should be completed within timeframe.

“The government believes in a balanced development and billions of rupees are being spent on development of rural areas,” he said, adding that completion of the development projects will raise the living standard of rural masses and modern facilities will also become available to them.

Under Khadim-e-Punjab Rural Roads Programme, he said a splendid project worth billions of rupees of construction and rehabilitation of rural roads is running successfully. He said that a huge amount of Rs 15 billion is being spent on this project during current fiscal year and all rural roads of the province will be completed at a cost of more than Rs 150 billion by 2018.
