The Supreme Court (SC) has sought a reply from the federal government within 24 hours for Urdu not being used as official and national language remarking, “Enough is enough, the government should file a reply otherwise the final order will be issued on Wednesday.”

A three-member Supreme Court (SC) bench presided over by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja took up the case for hearing Tuesday.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja has remarked, “All the responsibility for non implementation of the constitution with reference to adoption of Urdu as official and national language rests with the Chief Executive (CE). No one should remain under any delusion. No one is above the Constitution. We will summon everyone including CE in court when we need so. Playing jokes should be stopped. If we can issue an order then we also know how to get it implemented. Enough is enough. The Federal government should file a reply; otherwise, we will issue a final order on Wednesday. Responsible officers should not let down their institution this way.”

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed remarked, “If the federal government is not discharging its obligation with regards to the national language then who does this responsibility rests with?”

Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Abdul Rashid told the court that no one, including the secretary cabinet division and information secretary, is ready to give a reply with respect to the orders of the SC. Contacts have been made repeatedly but no reply is being received so far. The court should issue an order on its own in this regard.

The court while expressing displeasure over this said, “It seems as if government does not want to implement constitution but it is standing there with a stick to get the Constitution followed by the people through force. No one will be allowed to make fun of the constitution. Four to five hearings have taken place and government is averting the matter continuously. Now this will not work.”

The court ruled that law officer says that no officer is ready to give a reply despite best efforts. Court is adjourning the hearing until Wednesday so that Federal government could file reply. If no reply is filed then the court will issue its order.
