Lawyers boycott courts on May 12 mayhem anniversary

The legal fraternity of the city on Tuesday observed boycott of courts to mark the 12th May, the anniversary of killing of at least 36 people, when the then dysfunctional chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had arrived in Karachi to address a lawyers’ gathering.

On Monday, the Sindh Bar Council had announced to observe the black day and requested the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA), Karachi Bar Association, Malir Bar Association and other bar associations of the province to boycott the legal work and hold general body meetings to pay tribute to those scarified their lives for restoration of the judiciary. The SHC chief justice had suspended the legal wok at the request of the SBC and SHCBA.

The general body meeting of the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) was also held to condemn the mayhem of May 12, 2007. The meeting adopted a resolution which condemned the incident and called for an inquiry into the incident in order to unveil the hidden hands behind the carnage.

Meanwhile, the member of SBC held a press conference at SBC office, condemning the brutal incident. They called upon the chief justice of Pakistan to order a judicial inquiry into the incident.
