The civic authorities have informed the Sindh High Court that the welfare organisation, Chhipa, has encroached upon pavement near its head office at Lines Area for setting up a dastarkhwan and workshop.
The district East deputy commissioner and counsel for the Board of Revenue submitted their reply to the petition filed by the head of welfare organisation, Muhammad Ramzan Chippa, who moved the court pleading to it to restrain the civic authorities for unlawfully dispossessing them from the property.
They stated that the Chippa had encroached upon the footpath, causing public nuisance. Taking their comments on record, the court directed the petitioner to approach the district administration to formulate a plan after mutual consultation for a suitable place for carrying out social work.
In the meantime, the court restrained the district administration from taking any action against the welfare organisation without due course of law.
Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel submitted that following verbal permission of the authorities, the organisation had set up its dastarkhwan and workshop on the city government’s open space near its head office at Lines Area.
He claimed that the owners of the adjoining plot wanted to grab the organisation’s property and in an attempt to depose them they stormed the head office along with over 10 persons, damaging the furniture and other belongings. They also misbehaved with the organisation’s head, he added. Subsequently, the counsel said, the organisation registered an FIR against them but later they were released on bail.
He claimed that they approached Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (KCCI) former president Siraj Kasim Telli to have the property vacated from the organisation. At the behest of Telli, the counsel said, the deputy commissioner telephoned the organisation’s head, asking him to vacate the space and warned of action in case of non-compliance.
