White Lies

There’s some peculiarities to Pakistani politicians. When they’re in power they keep wondering how long they’ll remain in power. And when they’re not in power they wonder when they’ll come to power. And it doesn’t matter whether they’re religious or not, they are all, almost without exception, superstitious. Everybody has a pir, with the exception of Mush. Nawaz has a pir. Imran has a pir. And, irony of ironies, both have the same pir. It gets better. “Beware the ides of July”, he’s warned the PM. At the same time, “July’s your time”, he’s already tipped off Khan. Maybe that led to the ‘elections this year’ call. Strange things happen to strange politicians.

Money talks and BS walks, of course. But now it’s also true of education. Better flash your designer bags and fashion jewellery if you want the kids to get good, private school, education. Yes, glamour is important. So the moms better have the right bags and wear fine lawn, for the sake of their kids, especially at pre-nursery level. And interestingly, there’s compartmentalisation within trendy institutes as well. You’ll always have those smart working class people who can talk good but are a little, shall we say restricted, financially. Now they ‘don’t got no chance’, as they say, in the upscale category where pedigree, and money, matters. So they have a few branches for those types too, in the not so posh areas, of course. Call that education apartheid if you like, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.
