Farooq warns of riots over water crisis in city

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar Wednesday warned against the possibility of ethnic riots in Karachi over acute shortage of water.

Addressing a press conference at Nine Zero, Sattar said the MQM would stand by people who decided to stage a sit-in for supply of water. “So far we had stopped the people of Karachi from staging sit-ins.”

“I am afraid that water issue can trigger ethnic riots in the city,” he said. He alleged the managing director of the Water Board was working on a political agenda. The PPP government, he continued, was using Water Board for political interests.

“The provincial government is responsible for the recent water crisis in Karachi. Sharjeel Memon is personally responsible for the crisis,” said MQM senior leader Farooq Sattar as he addressed a Rabita Committee press conference in Karachi.

Sattar claimed that the MQM was keeping the emotions and angry Karachi citizens under control.  “If the MQM was not there, who knows what would have happened on the streets of Karachi,” he said.

Sattar slammed Sharjeel Memon, who is the Sindh Local Government Minister, for the government’s inability to find a solution to the crisis. “The people of Karachi would have gotten some relief if the local government minister would have focused on the water crisis rather than wedding halls,” said Sattar.

Sattar termed the ‘artificial’ water crisis a punishment to the citizens of Karachi for supporting the MQM.
