Public transport on Murree Road will not be allowed after the Metro Bus Service becomes operational.
Talking to media, Secretary, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Awais Manzoor Tarar said that once the Metro Bus Service gets going, all other public transport will be banned from Murree Road and the decision has been conveyed to the public transporters.
They will be allotted new routes for their vehicles that carry commuters within Rawalpindi and Islamabad via Murree Road.
“We will allot public transport alternate routes for feeding the Metro Bus Service, he added.
Three new routes have been planned for the purpose while other routes would also be changed for better transport services in Rawalpindi, he said.
Road traffic load on Murree Road would also decline after the metro bus service becomes operational; he said adding that apart from the reduction in the traffic the remaining vehicles would also have cost benefits in terms of savings, as their speed on the road would improve.
According to RTA sources, the RTA has completed homework for changing old routes of public transport on Murree road after the completion of the Metro Bus Project. A decision has been taken to change the routes used by public transporters that stick to routes No. 1, 3 and 6.
The wagons that were earlier plying on route No 1 from GPO to Pak Secretariat will now start their route from Misrial road and reach Pak Secretariat via Kutchery, Rawal Road and Faizabad. Public transport plying on route No 6 will now start from Liaqat Colony, Chakri road and reach Pak Secretariat via Kutchery, Rawal Road, Chandni Chowk, Kurri Road and Islamabad Highway. A coaster service will be introduced from Saddar to Taxila in collaboration with a private transport company.
