PM, COAS arrive in Riyadh on day-long visit

ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif arrive at Riyadh today (Thursday) on a day’s trip to discuss the Yemen crisis with Saudi leader, according to local media sources.

PM and COAS are set to talk with Saudi authorities over Pakistani Parliament’s resolution on Yemen, according to sources.

The PM is accompanied by Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry.

During the visit, the civil and military leadership will meet King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz to discuss Yemen campaign, reported a local media outlet.

  1. It is a embarasing situation for Pakistan through no fault of it's own. If KSA and Gulf countries had decided on armed intervention in Yemen and had expected Pakistan's army's boots on the ground they should have requested this through diplpomatic channels. Instead they engaged media to do this and issued veiled threats! This smaks of hubris and amtatuer tactics which have backfired. Pakistan is not a kingdom but a democracy and the latter demands a debate which has refused the implied request from KSA. One cannot understand this rush by the COAS and the PM to rush to KSA to explain. We standby the Saudis to protect their sovernigty but not their efforts for regime change in Yemen—period. Our PM and COAS has no experience in international affairs! let the diplomats do it. It is their turf.
