PM seeks report on providing LNG to power sector

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has sought report on the matter of providing 200 MMCFD Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imported from Qatar to power sector and fertilizer industry without determination of tariff.

Orders have been issued for fixation of responsibility and initiation of action against those found responsible in this scam.

The law ministry has been directed to work out summary to introduce amendment in rules and regulations and OGRA Ordinance 2002 for fixation of prices.

Sources said the ministry of petroleum authorities had provided 200 MMCFDLNG imported from Qatar to power sector and fertilizer sector without determination of tariff.

As per official documents, the ministry of petroleum had got summary on importing LNG from Qatar approved from ECC wherein it is laid down in categorical terms that rules and regulations be got approved from OGRA for providing LNG to power sector and fertilizer industry. But the OGRA refused to give approbation to rules and regulations evolved by ministry of petroleum for determination of LNG tariff. On the other hand, the ministry of petroleum provided LNG to power sector and fertilizer industry despite refusal from OGRA for approving rules and regulations. The ministry of petroleum sources said no agreement with government of Qatar had been reached for importing LNG and only private sector had now imported 200 MMCFD LNG from Qatar.
