National Assembly (NA) Speaker Ayaz Sadiq received a letter written by the former Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry regarding the resignations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers.

According to media report, the speaker will review all aspects of the letter and would also hold consultations with the law wing of the National Assembly regarding the letter today (Monday).

The former CJ in his written letter to the speaker as an ordinary citizen stated that PTI lawmakers did not hold any constitutional entitlement to a seat in the Parliament after having tendered their resignations.

Meanwhile, PTI Central Information Secretary Dr Shireen M Mazari on Sunday critiqued ex-CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry’s letter to the National Assembly speaker on the issue of the PTI MNAs return to the NA.

She said this proves once again that Chaudhry was always a part of Nawaz Sharif’s team. Even a cursory look at his record of actions relating to the Sharifs makes this abundantly clear, she added.

The statement quoted an example, which said, “He gave the SC stay order that kept Shahbaz Sharif as CM for five years in Punjab before the 2013 elections. Again, it was strange how CJ Chaudhry actively pursued many corruption cases against some leaders, as well as the NRO case, and castigated a number of NAB chairmen for not being active enough; but he never took up a single case, out of the many lying with NAB, against the Sharifs.”

“In the Asghar Khan case, once the evidence had come before him of the money that was doled out, he took no action except simply to tell the FIA to inquire into the issue. He did not follow up with the FIA and let the whole case effectively be shelved. In the 2013 elections, he especially chose to address the ROs, which was an unprecedented action by a SC CJ. After the 2013 elections he held a special function as CJ for the ROs congratulating them for their role in the elections.”

PTI will bring all these points up with proof during the hearing of the defamation case filed by Chaudhry against the chairman as well as proving that the ex-CJ was complicit with Ramday in electoral rigging, she said.

  1. I read this one (at Ana of The Book Smugglers' urging) and I totally agree, it sneaks up on you and is just a really delightful book. I am really looking forward to continuing with the series now and I'm not a mystery person at all.
