A pregnant woman who went into a coma following a crash five months ago woke up to learn she had given birth.

Sharista Giles was driving home from a concert in December when a car accident left her with injuries so devastating doctors said there was little hope she would recover.

The 20-year-old from Tennessee in the US was five months pregnant at the time and in January doctors were forced to deliver the baby body early.

He weighed just two pounds at birth and has been name Baby L until his mother recovers enough to name him herself.

Sharista was moved to a rehab centre in March after she lay in a coma for months in hospital with no signs of improvement.

But stunned staff called her family when she began opening her eyes.

Mum Beverly said: “Sharista opened her eyes and blinked and squeezed our fingers when we asked her to. She was following her Daddy’s voice.”

Her family then broke the news by showing her a picture of the baby.

Beverly said: “Her father showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture. When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again. She has had her eyes open all morning and still has them open. She is not communicating yet but this is a great start.”

Sharista’s family have hailed her remarkable recovery as a miracle after doctors told them there was nothing else they could do.

Beverly said: “The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do. They already gave up hope but we never gave up. She’s fought this hard.”

Doctors said they are still not certain of the young mum’s prognosis but she has already defied their expectations by waking up.

Her family say they are confident she will make a complete recovery citing her remarkable fighting spirit.

Sharista’s baby has also proved as determined as his mum and his now a healthy six pounds.
