The United Nations Security Council has added Pakistani Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah on its sanctions list for perpetrating and financing terror acts, diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.
Nicknamed “Radio Mullah”, Fazlullah will now be subjected to assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo. The decision was taken in the 15-member council’s al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee on a proposal by the United States.
In January, the US designated Fazlullah as a global terrorist and slapped sanctions against him.
Fazlullah was Taliban chief in Swat Valley and became a leader after his predecessor Hakimullah was killed in a US drone attack in November 2013.
The TPP claimed responsibility for the December 2014 attack on an army run school in Peshawar that resulted in the deaths of at least 132 children, 10 teachers and three soldiers.
Fazlullah was also said to be behind the shooting of education activist Malala Yousafzai in 2012.
