Interior Ministry men in dock over illegal extradition of criminals

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has started investigation from a joint secretary and a deputy secretary of the Interior Ministry about extradition of nine criminals from Thailand who were convicted in that country over narcotics smuggling and other serious crimes.

At the same time the Interior Ministry has written a letter to the foreign secretary for action against the foreign officials involved in the racket.

According to details, nine convicts were extradited from Thailand some weeks back without the permission of the competent authority.

The sources said that if the allegation of the section officer was proved during investigation of the joint secretary and deputy secretary, they would be arrested. However insiders say that some officials of the ministry are trying to protect the additional secretary.

In the meanwhile, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has completed consultations for a new ECL policy and with inputs from the ministries of interior and law and justice. The new policy is expected to be ready in the next two to three weeks.

According to sources, the new policy proposes placing of names of dangerous criminals on ECL for three years and for an indefinite period of those involved in terrorist and anti state activities.

It has also been decided to reconsider the cases of people who are on ECL for the last 30 years. Presently there are 8,500 names on the ECL and among them are those who have already died because the list has not been updated.
