Arrangements finalised for campaign against polio in high risk UCs

A target population of 2,40,955 children under five will be vaccinated against polio by 100 female community vaccination staff  during a week-long special campaign commencing on Monday in eight high risk UCs of Karachi.

The campaign, part of an exercise to eliminate polio virus from the local environs is being regularly held on the directives of Sindh chief minister under the supervision of Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui.

The commissioner chairing a meeting to review the arrangements made for the week-long campaign in UCs Muzaffarabad, Muslimabad, Gajro, Songal, Manghopir, IttehadTown, Chistinagar and Islamia Colony said the campaign would be re-started after a gap of two weeks.

The exercise commencing from Monday till April 4 would be undertaken by female community workers and not by oral polio teams of the EPI. This is to enhance accessibility and also to prevent any sort of refusals under one or the other pretext. The meeting among others was also attended by concerned deputy commissioners, Director Health, KMC, Dr Zafar Ejaz, concerned town health officers, representatives of WHO, Unicef and Karachi Police.

Commissioner Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui said the efforts would continue to be expedited so that the virus was absolutely eliminated across the province.
