As PTI forms EC for intra party elections, PTI VC Qureshi says party decided to take action on Justice Wajihuddin’s recommendations and will dissolve all intra-party bodies in coming days
The senior leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which met in the federal capital under the chairmanship of Imran Khan on Sunday decided that decision to return to the assemblies would be taken after the formation of the Judicial Commission.
A statement by PTI Information Secretary Shirin Mazari said the meeting discussed the PTI Election Tribunal Report and the PTI-PML-N agreement on the formation of the Judicial Commission.
The PTI senior leadership welcomed Election Tribunal report in the “democratic spirit”. In the light of the report it was decided that an Election Commission for PTI will be formed immediately and necessary committees will be formed under the EC to finalise membership and election modalities.
The EC will recommend to the chairman about the time period required for holding intra-party elections after assessing the administrative/constitutional requirements.
The leadership accepted the tribunal’s recommendation regarding dissolution of all elected bodies.
However, the chairman, in accordance with the tribunal’s decision to leave it to him to decide in line with the recommendations, has nominated the dissolved office bearers to their elected offices till the election schedule recommended by the EC. The current political climate and the fluid political situation required this decision as the party cannot function in a vacuum, the statement added.
On the JC and return to legislatures to the assemblies, the senior leadership discussed the issue and it was decided that decision whether to return to the assemblies would be taken after the actual formation of the Judicial Commission.
Moreover, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that Imran Khan would soon announce the names of Election Commission. He said the party will consider returning to the National Assembly after formation of the judicial commission agreed to by the government.
Talking to journalists after a party meeting at Imran Khan’s residence in Bani Gala, Qureshi said PTI had decided to take action on Justice Wajihuddin Ahmed’s recommendations and will dissolve all intra-party bodies in days to come.
Justice Wajihuddin had been tasked by PTI chief Imran Khan to scrutinise complaints related to PTI’s intra-party elections held in 2013. After conducting his probe, Justice Wajihuddin had recommended that the party dissolve all bodies and hold a re-election.
“Respecting Justice Wajihuddin’s findings, the party has decided to conduct a re-election within its folds,” said Qureshi. “Till elections are held again, persons and bodies nominated by Imran Khan will represent the party on the national level.”
