Senate deputy chair stands up for seminaries

Senate Deputy Chairman Abdul Ghafoor Haideri on Sunday said that he would not let such legislation pass which discriminates against seminaries.

Addressing reporters after laying foundation of a madrassa in Lahore, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) leader Haideri said that he will work together even with those who did not vote for him for the post of deputy chairmanship in the Upper House.

He said his party has reservations over the 21st Amendment because β€œit appears that seminaries are being targeted in the guise of the amendment.”

He said he will fight attempts to legislate against seminaries whether he retains his deputy chairmanship or not. However, he said, his party will support the government in its fight against terrorism.

The deputy chairman said that amendment of any kind in the blasphemy laws will not be permitted so long as he is in the Senate. He said Karachi Operation should conclude as per agreement of all parties just like it was started.
