  • PM lashes out at dictators; says will out terrorism from Pakistan
  • Says Karachi operation not targeted against any specific political party

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said most of his government’s time is consumed in tackling terrorism and the acute energy crisis which leaves little time for development works.

Expressing strong resolve to eliminate terrorism, Sharif said the military operation against terrorists in North Waziristan that started in June last year will continue till the elimination of the last terrorist.

“Come what may the operation against terrorists will continue in the country till elimination of the last terrorist,” he said and praised the army for breaking “the back of terrorists”.

“I am working hard to curb terrorism and overcome energy crisis. I spend 90 per cent of my time on these issues. And because of this, not much time is left to look into the other matters related to development works,” Sharif said addressing businessmen in Sialkot.

He also lashed out military dictators, saying they were responsible for halting the country’s progress.

Sahrif also made it clear that anti-crime drive in Karachi was not against any political party. Sharif reminded that he had dissolved his government and imposed Governor’s Rule in Sindh after the murder of Hakeem Muhammad Saeed.

The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), which has stronghold in Karachi, accused the government of targeting it for “not cooperating with it in Senate elections”.

The prime minister said the government was committed to making Karachi peaceful so that investors could utilise the existing excellent infrastructure of the port city.

He said incidents of kidnapping for ransom, targeted killings and heinous crimes had declined following the operation and hoped that life in the city would soon return to normalcy and make it a haven for industrialists and investors from across the world.

He said the PML-N government was not doing any favour by conducting the operation, rather it was doing so because of its national obligations. It was the responsibility of the government to make Karachi and the entire country peaceful, he added.

ENDING ENERGY CRISIS:

Sharif also claimed that his government would overcome energy crisis in two to three years.

“A country without gas and electricity cannot progress,” he said.

Currently, Pakistan’s demand for electricity is around 14,000 MW as compared to total generation of 7,000 MW and the crisis has been aggravated by petrol shortage.

The government, he said, was also working hard to lower the prices of fertilizers so that the rate of agricultural products decline and their production increases. This, he said, would help reduce inflation rate and increase exports.

He announced that the government would construct an expressway between Sialkot and Lahore. The PM also stressed the need for setting up a technology university in Sialkot to benefit youngsters, industrialists and exporters.

  1. "I spend 90 percent of my time in solving these (terrorism and energy) issues and I am working hard. As a result, I have less time to work for the development of the country," said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while addressing Workers Convention in Sialkot. To get some idea of his 'devotion' we have got to know his total working hours a day on which to calculate this ninety percent. The general perception is that he spends a lot of time on his personal business interests as well and it was once rumoured that a prominent female visitor he had from Thailand was also sort of a business associate.

And if he spends lot of time solving energy issues, what are all those high officials like Minister of Power doing. Now, the daily load shedding that I suffered two years back was three daily spells of two hours each, which have now been increased to three, two and half hourly spells daily. With this sort of results, those dealing with this issue definitely need to be replaced.

And on the question of terrorism, we know that armed forces' are doing excellent work in tribal areas, and the Police and Rangers were scoring successes in Karachi but suddenly MQM seems to have become the target of Rangers who are receiving much applause and encouragement from influential civilian and military circles. And then there were sensational video statements shown on various channels from Saulat Mirza made just hours before his execution. There won't be many countries on earth in which a prisoner in a death cell could stage such a drama and obviously he had help from some influential quarters. However, the script writers, if there were some, made a silly mistake when they asked Saulat Mirza to claim that he received telephonic orders to murder people direct from Altaf Hussain at an MQM leader's home. It is simply unbelievable that any person with the slightest sense would take the risk of issuing such 'sensitive' orders on telephone in the circumstances where phone-tapping is quite common. So, perhaps media war has also been started against MQM.

Perhaps getting inspiration from Saulat Mirza, Uzair Baloch has made disclosures from Dubai that he murdered people on orders from Peoples Party leaders, including the top one. However, pre-occupied with MQM, no body seems to have time for Uzair Baloch's statements.

So, coming back to PM's statement of devoting substantial time to planning how to control terrorism, the fact is that all the operations are being handled by Police, Rangers, Military and the Intelligence Agencies.

And the provincial governments were supposed to fight major battles within cities, towns and villages against sources that are responsible for the creation and spread of intolerance, militancy and terrorism and this was to be done through short, medium and long-term measures. However, not much is being done by the civilian governments in this regard, except taking some cosmetic measures. So, while talking of spending substantial time of the subject of terrorism, what actually is PM spending his time on?

And when it comes to development all that the PM seems to think of are motorways and Metro buses. We wish he could think of factors which help nation-building, like good governance, electoral reforms, detailed interpretation of article 62 and 63 to ensure strict application of eligibility criteria of applicants, education, health, population planning, economic development, ports, shipping and railways and things like that instead of just announcing one motorway after another.

  2. I have not seen such a flimsy excuse from any Prime Minister of the country. It seems he hardly works. Has he solved any of the issues and crises mentioned by him. He does not understand the mechanics of government. He should take lessons from some experts in administration to teach him the basics or the fundamentals of governance. Forget the good governance. The two brothers are not suited for democratic working of the country.

They only know one way of running the administration. They try to look busy. One tours the world with a begging bowl resurrected by the good Ishaq Dar the accountant turned finance minister. He is running the economy of the country in Munshi style. Get rid of the kings men around you then you might be able to work your way out of the mess.

The terrorists are the creature of your own follies. You wasted precious time in delaying the use of State Force against them. You will have to contend with it. Quit blaming General Musharraf for all the ills of your own creativity. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.

Admit your failures and diagnose your problem and sickness. Crying over the spilt milk or crying wolf would not help. Mend your style and ways. Formulate policies to deal with the crises, otherwise no one can help you with running the government.

Where is the real deal – the development policy of your government ? Building bridges, under and over passes is not development. Building the character , caring for the human beings and securing the future of the nation is development. Spend money on education and health sector , that will ensure development and progress. Just compare other nation 's budgetary layouts. How much the spend on education and health sectors. They have developed a system of high excellence of education and the state of the art hospitals and health system. Try and lean from their experiences, if you can not do something on your own.
