Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Raza Khan requesting the suspension of a Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
The letter, which was written by Nawaz Sharif as PML-N chief, requested the suspension of PML-N MPA Wajihuzzaman from the KP assembly for violating the party’s policy and for misconduct.
Wajihuzzaman, whose membership from the party was suspended earlier this week, had suggested the name of an independent candidate for the Senate elections, which was in violation of the party’s policy as senate candidates must be from the assembly.
Since the MPA’s party membership was terminated, Sharif requested the CEC to suspend Wajihuzzaman’s membership from the KP Assembly as well.
Sources in the ECP said that the matter will be investigated after a formal reference has been received from KP Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.
PPP stalwart Raza Rabbani and Abdul Ghafoor Haideri of the JUI-F were sworn in as Senate’s chairman and deputy chairman, respectively, on Thursday.
Rabbani, who was the consensus candidate of all parties, including the ruling PML-N, was elected unopposed whereas Haideri was elected with a majority vote, defeating PTI’s candidate Shibli Faraz.
They were administered the oath of office by senior PML-N leader Ishaq Dar, who had been nominated by the president to chair the first session of the new Senate. Earlier, Dar also administered the oath to the 48 newly-elected senators.
