A review meeting regarding improvement of Karachi Zoo was held under the chair of Karachi Commissioner Shaib Ahmad Siddiqi at Zoo Office.
It was told during the meeting that two museums would be constructed at Karachi Zoo and Safari Park for preservation of the history of Zoo and to provide knowledge and information about the animals. The commissioner appreciated the idea and asked the CSR KMC director to take suggestion of all concerned departments, organisation and experts who were concerned about animals in this regard so that the idea could be implemented according to the international standards.
Briefing about the museum, it was told that the museum premises at the Zoo would be vertical due to the limited space available at the Zoo. However, the museum at the Safari would be constructed at the land of 3,000 yards.
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) announced Rs 1 million as an initial fund for constructing national level museums. A 3,000 square yard land would be allocated in Safari Park for this purpose, while the museum would be built in a building adjacent to Karachi Zoo, encircled with galleries on four of its sides.
The meeting reviewed the steps taken in Karachi Zoo for attending the animals. The zoo administration was directed to step up the measures of taking care of the animals. “The confiscated meat in the city would be fed to lions and other carnivorous animals,” Siddiqui said.
It was also decided in the meeting that the action would be taken against those illegally involved in the sale of precious birds. In this connection, it was decided that before initiating the action, sellers of birds at Empress Market and at other places would be given knowledge about relevant laws and the importance of specification of animals which are not allowed to sell according to the law. A committee formed in the this regard would visit the places and give one month time to be aware of law
It was informed by the Karachi Youth Team commissioner that a local paint company wanted to carry out painting work at a portion at zoo as its corporate responsibility work. It was also informed in the meeting that Zoology Department of Karachi University would hold a four-day seminar to highlight the Zoo management and life of animals at the zoo. It was decided in the meeting that WWF would coordinate and cooperate in this regard and would arrange speakers from abroad to participate in the seminar
It was also decided in the meeting that an internship programme in coordination and cooperation of WWF would be arranged at Karachi Zoo.
